A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
