Colombia's President Warns 'I Shall Take Up Arms Once More' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have intensified the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising strains bilaterally following American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He operates drug factories and production sites and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Escalating Tensions and Allegations

Talking to reporters over the weekend, the American leader threatened similar military action against Bogotá, stating Colombia is “very sick too” and “run by an unwell individual involved in producing cocaine and distributing it to the United States."

Although Colombia is the leading producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation for decades served as a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign against narcotics trade and benefited from cross-party backing in Washington, but relations have worsened significantly since Trump was elected.

The nation's drug trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions like one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters demobilised following a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Strong Answer

In response to a query whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle decades ago, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no illegitimate and I am not a narco," he stated.

"Trump speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a post.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will transform into numerous insurgents across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom a large part of the country admires and supports, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Statesman

Petro spent part of his youth participating in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate to have ever engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in drafting the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and eventually served as a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I pledged to never again hold arms again ... but in defense of my country I will take up weapons once more," he said.

Heightened Measures and Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the national leader's personal security had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump's stance, yet figures from all sides of the political spectrum have denounced the threats of American military action against their nation.

Political and Financial Pressure

American authorities cancelled Petro’s visa after he urged US troops to disobey orders that violate law. Months later, the US enacted asset freezes targeting Petro, the first lady and a number of key allies.

Simultaneously as the US increased its troop levels near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out operations against vessels off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
