RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
