Matteo Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Matteo's Unexpected Comeback

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
