In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
